Leazes Park, the oldest public park in Newcastle, opened in 1873 and from the 23rd of December 1873 has provided an excellent venue for events. The first cycle races were held many years ago and remain just memories but in June 2006 top quality racing once again returned to the park. This international standard racing has become an annual fixture in the parks event calendar.
The smooth refurbished paths provide an excellent circuit with fast descents down the Lime Avenue, a long uphill climb to the ornate Jubilee Gates which commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee and a variety of fast and slow corners through the verdant and wooded park. The route takes riders around the historic terrace and past the lake while spectators are catered for with a variety of viewing areas and other entertainments at the re-created bandstand.
Leazes Park is just 10 minutes from the city centre and both Metro and bus stations and is a tranquil, safe, traffic free environment for people to enjoy at their leisure.
