The lucky individuals will receive training from the BBC for their role as amateur announcers at the differing sports. As part of the weekend they will attend a young announcer's workshop in Gateshead where experts including one of the best known voices in sport, Paul Dickenson, will be on hand to offer hints and tips from the world of sports commentary. They are then deployed across the sporting venues within the host cities of Gateshead, Newcastle and Sunderland to begin their exciting new roles as sports announcers.

One of the selected youngsters is Lyndon Longhorn from King James I Community Arts College. Lyndon said: "I'm very excited to do the commentating for this year's Sainsbury's UK School Games, I can't wait to get going. I was a bit nervous about the whole thing at first but now I'm feeling much more confident for the events next week.

"Sports announcing is something that I would definitely think about doing in the future but primarily I'm concentrating on my swimming for the moment. I would love to reach the Paralympic Games in 2012 or 2016 and represent my country."

Also selected are: Jayne Edwards of Whickham School & Sports College Gateshead, Samantha Neill from Joseph Swan School in Gateshead, Jonathan Baines and Patrick Wilson of Houghton Kepier School in Houghton-Le-Spring, Abby Bell and Nadia Errington from Benfield, Jack Clark from Gateshead, Sarah Walker from Durham, Jessika Kitson and Sarah Calder of Farringdon in Sunderland and Amy Jensen and Joseph Champken from John Spence Community High School in North Shields.

The young commentators programme is a unique opportunity which showcases future talent in sports announcing and offers local youngsters the chance to get involved in the Sainsbury's UK School Games 2010 which is being hosted on their home turf. The programme is a fantastic way to engage and involve children in sport in alternative ways. The Sainsbury's UK School Games will be taking place between the 2-5 September 2010.
