Seventeen year old athlete Patrick Martin of Down, Northern Ireland looks certain to follow in his father's footsteps as a successful hockey athlete, as it was announced he will compete in the 2009 UK School Games.
Patrick will represent Ulster playing against the UK's teenage elite in the hockey event, being held at the Welsh Institute of Sport in Cardiff from 3 - 6 September.

Patrick, who is a student at Sullivan Upper School in Holywood, is the son of Stephen Martin who won Olympic gold (1998) and bronze (1994) playing for Great Britain.

"Once I took an interest in hockey at primary school, Dad helped develop my skills. I have also benefitted through coaching at my school and club," said Patrick.

"Dad's very competitive, he's helped me to become more competitive especially over the past few years when we have been playing together on 2nd XI team at Lisnagarvey Hockey Club."

"Dad still trains a lot just to keep fit and we do some endurance runs together. But his body wouldn't stand up to the other endurance, speed and stamina training I have to do."

"He did ensure that I took my sticks and did some training on our recent summer holidays in preparation for the UK Schools Games. He's especially helpful on ensuring I spend time on my technical skills and that I practice properly!" he said.
