"Sheffield is delighted to be hosting the Sainsbury's UK School Games 2011 and we in the City extend a very warm welcome to all the young athletes taking part. As far back as 1995 Sheffield was recognised as the first National City of Sport, for our commitment to grass roots sports development as well as elite level events. This dedication continues and will be evident when we welcome the 1600 competitors and over 400 officials in September.
With so many world class venues in the city, we are sure that all of those taking part will be inspired to give world class performances, standing them in good stead for their future sporting careers. But above all else, Sheffield's fundamental resource is its people. Sheffield is a welcoming city - its communities having a well deserved reputation for unpretentious friendliness and a mix of honesty with a spirit of mind that is radical and independent. I can guarantee that, everyone taking part will be given a welcome that is second to none."
