Dame Kelly Holmes travelled to Glasgow today to see the preparations for, and lend her support to the UK School Games in her role as the national school sport champion for England.
The double Olympic gold medallist met potential Scottish competitors and tried her hand at a number of unfamiliar sports such as fencing and table tennis, as well as casting her eye over young hopefuls from her own sport of athletics.
Dame Kelly said:
"I am passionate about ensuring support for young elite performers and providing high quality competition opportunities. The UK School Games is a great example of such an opportunity and I'm sure all the competitors will gain valuable experience at this event."
Dame Kelly also held a question and answer session with competitors and a number of young volunteers who will take part in the inaugural UK School Games in Glasgow from 7th to 10th September.
Dame Kelly said:
"It's great to be back in Glasgow and I'm really enjoying being able to work with talented youngsters like the Scottish UK School Games competitors. I hope that as national school sport champion I can give them some useful advice which will help them in future competitions."
The former middle distance runner was always a big hit when she competed in Glasgow and believes the appetite for sport in the city is as strong as ever.
